Multiple Order Waveplates

A multiple order Waveplate is a single piece of Laser Quality crystal quartz, whose retardation is exactly a quarter or half a wave. Retardation in Multi-Order Waveplates varies quickly with wavelength. Retardation is a function of thickness and is temperature dependent due to thermal expansion.

Multiple Order Waveplates are not recommended in strongly converging or diverging beams. Zero Order Waveplates offer reduced temperature sensitivity over Multiple Order Waveplates. When a moderate bandwidth is needed, Zero Order or an Achromatic Waveplate is the better choice.

Dual Wavelength Waveplates (DWP)

For a given Waveplate thickness a low order Waveplate will operate as a ¼ wave, ½ wave or full wave, at two wavelengths. By careful selection of the thickness it is possible to achieve a dual order Waveplate providing different retardation at different wavelengths. Tower Optical provides three standard DWP's for 532nm and 1064nm as shown in the table below. These versions are considered standard and are in stock. Other variations with ½ and ¼ wave are available on a custom basis.
